It is understood that scientists have decided to stop fishing after a survey found that squid catches in the Falkland Islands in the first season of this year were well below 2008 levels, while the Executive Secretary of the local fisheries company confirmed that it was normal for catches to be reduced by 25 per cent in any given calendar year, or 50 per cent in the second season, and that a sudden stoppage of the fishery would have been a severe blow to the most important fishery in the Islands, which would have been detrimental to the Islands' finances.
